This isn't one of New Milton's prominent historic buildings, but it's important to me, as it was the retirement bungalow that my parents built.

Hygienic Dairy Hygienic Dairy
My father, William Bailey, moved to the area in 1934, buying a small dairy business in Downton, and my mother Winifred moved here from Ibsley after they married in 1935. The business expanded and moved to premises in Ashley Common Road in 1938, then to Ashley Road in 1948, where it remained until being sold to Edgar's Dairies in 1961.
Click here for a full history of the dairy.
My parents then moved to Lymington, where they had a farm with a big old manor house, which my mother ran as a guest house. In the early 1970s they decided to retire, and moved back to Ashley, where they had friends and associations with Ashley Baptist Church.

105 Ashley Road
They bought a house at 105 Ashley Road (right) and, as it had a very large garden, they were able to build a chalet bungalow which faced onto Litchford Road. Additional numbering must have been allowed for as the first house in Litchford Road was previously Number 8. My father had started a small business called WG Bailford with a retired local builder, George Dunford and it was only natural that they would build the bungalow. The bungalow was named 'Grantley', a combination of the names Grant (my mother's maiden name) and Bailey.

Sale & Demolition
My father died in 1983 and my mother lived in the bungalow until her death in 2004. The bungalow was put up for sale but, as it was too 'grand' for its location, there was no interest. Eventually, it was sold to a developer, with the bungalow to be demolished to make way for houses.
